Hello everyone,
When we first moved into our new flat about 10 years ago, we designated a cozy little corner for our Home Office. It was supposed to be a sacred workspace, equipped with a “working” desk where both my wife and I could dive into productivity. We imagined a sleek setup where inspiration and motivation would flow as freely as coffee. But, as any seasoned apartment-dweller knows, plans have a funny way of evolving.
As it turned out, the corner didn’t exactly suit my wife. She soon began venturing to the hidden nooks and crannies of the apartment, twisting and bending herself in ways that even a professional contortionist would frown upon. The poor setup was breaking her back (and her spirit), and so, the corner began its journey toward… transformation.
While I was out hunting for a more comfortable desk (the dream desk that would bring back her sense of comfort), an unexpected addition showed up in our designated work corner. An exercise bike, with its never-judging pedals, had rolled in. And then came an elliptical machine, bulky and hopeful, like it had some New Year’s resolutions of its own. Our Home Office corner was quickly evolving into a home gym, one piece of equipment at a time.
Fast forward nearly six years (or about five more unused exercise machines later), we finally made a decision: the equipment had to go! With a determination I hadn’t seen since we last organized our sock drawer, we freed the corner and redefined it, this time exclusively as my workspace.
So now, I’m here, staring at a freshly cleared space—a small niche about 65 cm deep and 147 cm wide, nestled near the balcony. It has all the promise of a perfect workspace, ready to be transformed into a small yet mighty corner office.

My Cozy Niche of Productivity: A Blueprint
Let’s take inventory of what this little spot has to offer:
- A Niche with a View: Near the exit to the balcony, the corner comes with abundant natural light during the day, thanks to the big window on the right. By evening, I’ve got a ceiling lamp a little to the left that bathes the space in soft, diffused white light. It’s the kind of gentle glow that says, “Work, but also… take it easy.”
- Sockets Galore: I have four outlets waiting for their moment to shine. There’s even a placeholder for a network socket—unfinished, naturally, because every project needs at least one loose end to keep life exciting.
- A Mysterious Wire Tunnel: The wall has a built-in tunnel for wires, ready to streamline the mess of cables that inevitably come with any tech setup. It’s a little like a secret passageway, but instead of leading to hidden treasures, it leads to… cable management.
- Shelving That Reaches for the Stars: Above the desk space, there’s a narrow white shelf with cabinets that go straight up to the ceiling. These top shelves are pretty much reserved for the things we’ll never actually use because, despite my best efforts at stretching, they remain entirely out of reach.
- Heavy-Duty Flooring: My corner rests on some sturdy, almost black tile flooring. It’s smooth enough that my chair glides with ease, but I’ll need some protective matting to keep the floor safe from the constant rolling of my chair’s wheels. As far as my chair is concerned, it’s training for a race.
The plan now? To create a functional, cozy workspace that doesn’t just tolerate my work life but enhances it. All that’s left is to find that perfect desk, place a plant or two, and maybe even add a quirky little decoration. Because if this corner has taught me anything, it’s that even the smallest spaces can have big dreams.
So here’s to the corner that could, with just a dash of imagination and a whole lot of persistence. And who knows, maybe this time the office corner will stay an office corner… at least until the next fitness fad hits.
Hope this brings a smile to your face as you imagine this little corner finding its final purpose!
